The Wellshire neighborhood is located south of the Observatory Park neighborhood and west of University Hills. The Wellshire Golf Course, an 18-hole course designed by Donald Ross in 1926, is located in the southeast corner of the neighborhood. The course was originally a private country club but was later purchased by the City and County of Denver in the 50’s when it began to experience financial difficulties. The course is arguably one of the most picturesque golf courses in Denver, landscaped with cottonwood trees and anchored by a gorgeous English-style Tudor club house.
Also located in the neighborhood is the Slavens School, a K-8 Denver Public School. The school’s consistently high rankings has attracted families to the neighborhood. The Slavens school district boundary covers all of the Wellshire neighborhood as well as the southern part of the University neighborhood.
Homes in the Wellshire neighborhood were mostly constructed in the 50’s and 60’s and reflect the era’s modest brick and ranch-style architecture. The neighborhood maintains strict control over exterior home modifications and requires approval of renovation plans and specifications by the Architectural Control Committee. Lot sizes are larger than the Denver neighborhoods to the north, but are consistent in size with with the nearby south Denver neighborhoods.
