The Whittier neighborhood is named after the Whittier Elementary School which is now located at Downing and 24th. The school’s name commemorates John Greenleaf Whittier, a 19th century Quaker poet who was an ardent advocate for the abolition of slavery in the United States.  The neighborhood name honors his legacy and signifies the role this historically integrated neighborhood has played in the City.

The Whittier neighborhood is mostly residential with pockets of retail sprinkled throughout and Manuel High School and Fuller Park providing a central anchor.  The majority of housing stock in the neighborhood was constructed prior to the 1940’s with architectural styles ranging from ornate Victorian Mansions to beautiful Denver Squares to affordable bungalow-style row homes.

Whittier residents enjoy close proximity to City Park and the City Park Golf Course as well as easy access to Downtown Denver and a light rail stop.
